The Tools Behind MONOFRAME #02 Why I Painted My MacBook Keyboard.

EDITORIAL 023

Mono Frame

A look behind the MONOFRAME workspace and one of the most unnecessary — yet strangely satisfying — projects I’ve ever done. After the Command key became annoyingly glossy, I spent three hours carefully masking every key before painting the keyboard matte black. It probably voided my warranty, but it completely fixed the shine and even made typing feel better. No regrets. Durability test still in progress.

Why I Painted My MacBook Keyboard.

Most people probably wouldn’t notice it.

I did.

The Command key on my MacBook had slowly become glossy from years of use, and for some reason… I couldn’t stop looking at it.

Every time I opened my laptop, my eyes went straight to that one shiny key.

It bothered me far more than it should have.

So I decided to fix it.

Not by replacing the keyboard.

Not by buying a new MacBook.

I painted it.

I’m usually pretty confident with masking work, but I seriously underestimated how tiny the gaps between MacBook keys are.

I spent nearly three hours carefully masking every single key.

Three hours.

For a keyboard.

There were moments when I questioned every decision that had led me to this point.

At this point, I’m fairly certain my warranty has officially left the chat.

Worth it.

The glossy finish is completely gone.

The matte texture actually gives the keys a little more grip, and surprisingly…

Typing feels better than before.

That wasn’t even the goal, but I’ll happily take it.

Will the paint survive years of daily use?

Honestly…

I have no idea.

If it starts getting glossy again, I’ll report back with the results.

For now, I’m calling this experiment a success.

No regrets.

Sometimes the smallest details are the ones that make a workspace feel truly yours.

This keyboard probably isn’t for everyone.

But every time I sit down to build MONOFRAME, it makes me smile a little.

And I think that’s reason enough.

Thanks for reading.
